Essential Boxing: Lessons 3 & 4

It took just under 6 minutes for Holly Holm to knock out Ronda Rousey at UFC 193. And she did it all with simple techniques and excellent movement.

Going into this title fight, Rousey had a perfect 12-0 record and had demolished her last three opponents in a combined time of 1 minute and 4 seconds.

Although Holm is a decorated fighter and champion in her own right, most people had Rousey winning the fight.

Holm, however, had a different idea.

From the first exchange, Holm showed her striking superiority. She was able to land strikes at will and move just far enough out of range so all Rousey hit was air.

By the end of the first round Rousey was bloodied, sluggish, and lost for ideas. Holm, on the other hand, looked fresh and had barely a mark on her.

At the start of the second round, Holm picked up where she left off landing crisps strikes and easily avoiding Rousey’s attacks.

59 seconds later, Holm landed a beautiful knockout kick to win the UFC title and become the first person to beat Rousey.

UFC 193 Holm vs Rousey KO

With nothing more than solid basic kickboxing skills, Holm showed how unrefined Rousey’s striking skill was.

Holm’s understanding of movement and timing was simply better and at the highest level that’s what you need.

That world class skill level all starts from learning and perfecting the essential striking techniques.
